The History of Tricots Jean Marc – The Legacy of a French Workshop

Tricots Jean-Marc is a women’s knitwear brand founded in Paris in 1972, at the heart of a textile industry that was then in full swing. It was born from the partnership of two men passionate about French knitwear, who decided to establish their own knitting workshop in the Paris region. At that time, more than 250 knitwear manufacturers were operating in the Île-de-France region, designing pieces for markets around the world.

But with the globalization of the 1980s, the industry was hit hard by massive offshoring. Workshops closed one after another. Today, only three remain to carry on this tradition.

Passed down from generation to generation, the brand is now led by the founder’s grandson, who passionately carries on the family legacy. Every sweater, every knit, and every stitch is designed and crafted in our workshop in France with the same commitment we’ve held for over 50 years: to elevate women’s knitwear through artisanal and sustainable craftsmanship.

Unique expertise in the art of women’s knitwear

The knit sweater, an iconic piece in any woman’s wardrobe, is much more complex to make than it appears. At Tricots Jean-Marc, each design is the result of meticulous craftsmanship, where every detail matters:

  • choice of yarn (merino wool, organic cotton, alpaca, silk, etc.)
  • selection of fabric thickness
  • machine programming based on the stitch type
  • hand-knitting and assembly in our Paris workshop.

Every stage of production, from knitting to assembly, is carried out in our workshop, ensuring local craftsmanship and consistent quality. We are also proud to be featured on the Made in France website, which highlights our work and shares our values of passing on our craft and responsible production.

If Tricots Jean-Marc has managed to survive where so many other workshops have closed, it is thanks to a constant commitment to reinventing itself. To keep French knitwear alive, we have invested in state-of-the-art machinery, diversified our sources of natural yarns, and, above all, explored new knitting techniques and creative fabric combinations.

Innovation is also reflected in our aesthetic: bold colors, unique textures, and redesigned cuts to suit today’s women. One foot in the past, our eyes set on the future.
